This Profile explores the experience and lessons learned so far of one of eEnviPer’s five pilot sites, the Niğde Province.
The province of Niğde is situated in the southeast of Turkey’s Central Anatolian Region. It covers an area of 7,312 km², and has a total population of approximately 350,000 people. Situated at an altitude of 1,229 m, the province is surrounded on three sides by the Taurus Mountains, including Mount Hasan and the Melendiz mountain ranges.
The local economy is based on agriculture (particularly apples and potatoes) and animal husbandry. The Niğde Central Industrial Centre, the Bor Leather Industrial Centre, the Birko Sheep Corporation, and numerous other trades, also provide important economic occupations for local people. Niğde is likewise an important centre of traditional handicrafts. Carpets made in Niğde are sold all over the world.
